Born during the 80's in a working class part of Newcastle Upon Tyne, Steve Farrell wanted to share his experiences with the world. At a early age he started writing poetry, which later turned into lyrics after being inspired by seeing Glenn Tilbrook of Squeeze perform. Music suddenly took over and to be performing was something that seemed like an unrealistic dream. While Steve was writing lyrics good enough for his musician friends to use, he had a confidence problem when it came to singing in front of anyone. A problem that held him back for much of his young adult life. Amongst the early co-written songs were “These Old Eyes” and “Photographs To Remind,” two songs that are still favorites today.

After co-writing songs with Matt Burton and Adam Urwin, Steve reluctantly sang the songs at small gatherings and always dreamed of doing live gigs, if only it wasn’t for the confidence problem. Steve continued writing and influences of Squeeze and The Beautiful South showed clearly in his lyric storytelling style.

During 2007, Steve met guitarist Craig Rutherford and the pair formed Project Echo, a duo whose style was more rock rather than Steve's traditional pop and folk style. They wrote together and recorded with Farrell finally taking on the role of a front man and lead vocalist. After a few months of writing music the pair split and went their separate ways. The highlight of Project Echo was the production of “Broken Tone” a song that would later be brought back three years later. After the demise of Project Echo, it was back to just writing new lyrics for Steve.

It was early 2010 when Farrell met with John Nottage based in Great Yarmouth and expressed interest in working with each other. Nottage an up coming guitarist sent some melodies, which Steve then made into rough demo recordings with lyrics and vocal lines. It was back to his traditional catchy acoustic pop music for Steve as the two finally met up and recorded “On Top of the World” along with a few other tracks. It was here when Knotted was born. The pair become song writing partners, putting together two live online radio sets by the end of the year, which helped create a small following. In early 2010 they recorded the album “Good Night Out” named after the catchy ironic song which had caught many people's attention. They were joined by a second guitarist in Gorleston born Simon Kippen, who had joined by the time Knotted recorded in the studio for the first time.

Also in the first part of the year Steve's confidence had grown and he finally did his first live appearance playing at Stein in Newcastle with Anthony Hall on guitar playing a mixture of Knotted songs. Farrell and Hall then gigged near on twice every week for several months performing Knotted songs and later introducing Steve's older songs such as These Old Eyes and Broken Tone. In March 2010 Knotted did their debut gig at The Arch 1 in West Ham. They performed as a three piece for the first and only time as Nottage later left shortly before their second gig. Knotted as just Farrell and Kippen went on to perform through out the Uk to promote their album up until July. In the meantime Steve was still doing solo gigs with Anthony Hall and later Craig Johnson. He was also writing new Knotted material with Simon Kippen while also writing new songs for a solo album project.

By the end of 2010, Steve had finally recorded his debut solo album and also relocated to Great Yarmouth. After a year of Knotted and solo gigs as well as two recordings 2011 started off much the same as Knotted performed a handful of gigs in and around London, mainly in support slots. They followed this up in March when they headed to the studio in Newcastle to record the first half of the next Knotted album. In May Steve finally released his solo album Happiness is Not a Destination receiving good reviews from buyers in the UK and the states.

After some time out in mid-2011, Knotted did another hand full of gigs and Steve performed an exclusive solo gig at the Arch 1 in November along with Craig Johnson. 2012 has started well as Knotted have been promoting the new set of songs with support slots at gigs as well as a headline spot in Norwich. They will be recording an EP and recording another few songs in the studio to complete the new album, which is due for release in March.
